Artisan Rehabilitation Forum seek revival of handicraft industry
SRINAGAR: Artisan Rehabilitation Forum organised Sunday a rally at Gazidori, Alamgari Bazar, Srinagar, demanding special focus towards the handicraft Industry in Kashmir to take it at par with other industries here.
Highlighting the plight of the artisans, the rally informed the devastating September 2014 floods ravaged the handicraft sector and there was an urgent need to support to the community financially.
Art looks like has halted for the moment and its not passing from one generation to the next, forum representative, Nazir Ahamd, said. Its not only in Srinagar that the art is dying a slow death but other districts too have faced the government apathy.
Moreover, the floods of the last year, he said, have severely impacted our business and there is no help from the government.
He said that the Artisan Credit Card scheme must benefit the artisans on similar lines as witnessed in the Kisan Credit Card.
The forum demanded that ACC be treated at par with KCC with 50 percent rebate given to artisans.
It was further demanded that Jammu & Kashmir Bank be held responsible for keeping thousands of accounts uninsured accounting for their losses in floods. The meeting was attended by the President Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Sheikh Ashiq.
Later addressing the forum members Ashiq assured the forum that they will strongly raise their demands with the government and banks here.
He assured them that KCCI had already taken the case of Handicrafts for being given recognition and incentives in the coming Industrial Policy,
Others who attended the function included former President KCCI Rauf Punjabi, Senior Vice President Mushtaq Wani ,Joint Secretary General Faiz Bakshi and EC member Parvez Naqash.
