Parents handover ‘drunk’ Principal to police

Srinagar:  Police Saturday arrested the Principal of Tiny Harts School following complaint by the parents of the students that he beat up their wards without any reason while in an inebriated state. 

The students alleged that the Principal was drunk and he went on rampage when they protested against the lack of facilities in the school. In a bid to pacify the students a police party led by SP South along with the Deputy Director Education and SDM Srinagar rushed to school and accordingly the Principal of the school was arrested and lodged into police station Batamaloo.

Tiny Harts School was established in the early 1990s by a non-local Mrs. Hart who is also the Principal of the school. Initially it was located at Raj Bagh, but was later shifted to Tengpora, Bye Pass, Srinagar.

Reports said that from past many months the parents as well as students frequently used to protest over the lack of facilities particularly the non-availability of bus service in the school. The school management according to aggrieved parents never allowed them to meet the owner of the school and they were never allowed to enter into the main premises of the school.

According to the CNS,the protesting student mostly from class 8th, 9th and 10th said that as usual they raised the issue pertaining to bus service with the Principal Bataacharaya on Saturday morning. “The reaction of the Principal was quick and he not only showered volley of abuses but also thrashed some students. He was drunk during school hours, they alleged. “He called somebody on phone and suddenly some outsiders entered into school and started thrashing us. We raised hue and cry. It is not for the first time we saw the Pincipal of the school drunk during school hours but so many times in the past we have seen him in such condition,” said that agitated protesting students adding that they are not feeling safe and secure in the school.

Some of the parents claimed that the lease of the Tiny Harts school expired in 2012 and the owner of the school has been using her influence to run the school illegally in Kashmir. “I have directed school management to come up with all the relevant school papers. I will check them. School authorities will not be allowed to play with the careers of the students,” Deputy Director Education Abid Rashid said.

Reports said, as the protests flared up with students taking to road, officials and police rushed to the spot and assured students and parents of swift action against the school authorities. Principal was immediately detained and lodged into police station Batamaloo for medical checkup.

“I am the person who dragged out the drunk Principal from his office and handed him over to police. The smell of liquor was emanating from his mouth and even some officials rebuked him for being drunk,” said a parent Tahir Ahmed Kalwal adding that the parents of hundreds of students will come on roads if authorities will try to save the ‘drunkard’  Principal.    

Meanwhile, Deputy Director Education Abid Rashid held separate meetings with the parents and the school management during evening hours. Abid Rashid said that if allegations are proven, action will be initiated against the school management under law.

According to the SP South Srinagar city, Sridhar Patil police has collected the blood samples and have referred them to forensic laboratory. “The report will reach to us within three to four days. Only after receiving the report, we can initiate any action,” he said adding that police have not received any written complaint from the parents yet.

Education Minister Nayeem Akhtar said that he has directed Director Education to conduct a time bound inquiry into the incident. “We will take stringent action against the Tiny Harts school management if it is proven that Principal was drunk during office hours,” he said. (CNS)
