BARAMULLA: As many as 250 people were on Friday taken ill in Gohiwa village of North Kashmirs Pattan town after consuming water supplied from a nearby tank which has not been cleaned from last five weeks.
The sick have been shifted to nearby Pattan and Tangmarg hospitals while some of them were referred to SMHS hospital Srinagar. Some of the sick are being treated in Government Middle School Gohiwa where a team of doctors arrived after the locals protest against the PHE department.
The protesters alleged that from past couple of weeks the PHE department has been supplying them contaminated water. It is now proven contaminated rain water was being supplied to people and we hold AEE responsible for the negligence, a protester told CNS adding that from past five years the water tank has not been cleaned in the area.
The protesters demanded immediate suspension and action against concerned Assistant Executive Engineer PHE.
Despite repeated attempts AEE Tariq Ahmed could not be contacted.
Confirming that hundreds of villagers have fallen sick after consuming contaminated water, Block Medical Officer Pattan Dr Adil said that they have already sent a team of doctors to take care of them. We have directed PHE to disconnect the water supply. The water samples have been taken to department of Epidemiology for test. (CNS)
