Students Protest Against Principal, Army Meddling In College

Bandipore: Police resorted to tear-gas shelling to disperse the hundreds of protesting college students who had taken to streets against the alleged unruly behavior of college principal and what they termed unnecessary intervention of Army in the district.

Eyewitnesses said that that hundreds of students from Degree College Bandipore Monday staged a protest at at Nowpora Chowk alleging that principal has been giving a free hand to a local army unit to organize functions in the colleges on daily basis, thus affecting the class work of the students.

Amid anti-principal slogans, the students demanded his immediate suspension and also appealed Education Minister to ask Indian Army to stop frequent intervention into the college affairs. The college principal abuses us and he doesn’t have good etiquettes. He has given a free hand to local army unit which organizes functions in the college on daily basis. As we are protesting here one of the Army officials and his colleague is still present in the college enjoying tea with the principal. We cant tolerate the unnecessary intervention of the army in an academic institution. The haughty and uncivilized principal has created a mess in the college, the protesting students alleged.

The students blocked Bandipore -Sopore road in Nowpora area prompting police to intervene. Reports said that to disperse the agitating students and clear the road for the vehicular movement, police burst dozens of tear-smoke shells, creating panic among passersby.

Many students mostly females, who ran helter and skelter for safety were injured during the melee.
