SRINAGAR: Former Minister and Congress politician Abdul Gani Vakil Sunday announced his resignation from Congress alleging humiliation by the party.
In a statement, Vakil said, With a heavy heart and deep agony, I tender my resignation from the primary membership of the Congress.
I will be the last person to accept the leadership of GA Mir being the junior most and possessing doubtful credentials, Vakil said.
He described the appointment of PCC President by Congress High Command as arbitrary, undemocratic and unfortunate and said, this unilateral decision of the Party High Command has risked the partys future to a greater extent in J&K State because multipronged challenges posed by new political dimensions etc. has already jolted Congress party severely here. The prudence and circumstances demanded that strengthening a capable and dynamic leadership was inevitable to counter challenges being faced by the party here to preserve its existence and relevance.
Former minister added that despite holding parleys with senior leaders after recognizing the dissent and reservation in respect of new incumbent, Congress high Command made commitments and held out assurances to me and other senior leaders for reconsidering the appointment of GA Mir as PCC President and according a decent look to the PCC, but for the reasons best known to Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi neither the commitments nor the assurances were respected despite the lapse of more than five months.
Vakil further said, due to this callous approach and precedence of dumping mass base leaders by the Congress High Command in the past also leaders like Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Mangat Ram Sharma, Gh Rasool Kar and even Abdul Gani Lone etc. once considered pillars of the Congress party in the Jammu and Kashmir were forced to leave the party in a state of arranged and managed humiliation.
Describing present culture and situation in the Congress party as suffocating and humiliating, Vakil said, except taking the painful decision of resigning from the party after forty years there lies no other option.
