Scores of youth taken into custody
SRINAGAR: As faithful gathered in mosques and shrines for Shab-e-Qadr, groups of youth engaged police in several areas including Khanyar, Nowhatta and Gojwara.
At least one person was injured while 35 others were detained by police, official sources and witnesses said.
They said the groups of youth emerged from the Jamia Masjid soon after Taraweeh prayers were over and pelted stones at police and CRPF deployed around the mosque.
The forces, in order to disperse the youths lobbed teargas and pepper shells and also resorted to pellet gunfire.
Witnesses said due to pellet gunfire, a youth identified as Imtiyaz Ahmad Teli of Ompora, Budgam sustained injuries and was shifted to SKIMS Soura. The youths right hand and leg was maimed by the pellets, witnesses said.
The clashes in Nowhatta spread to its adjoining areas after which police laid a trap to contain the stone-throwing, witnesses said, police detained around 35 youths.
Official sources confirmed that 35 youths were held by police and are currently lodged in different police stations of the city including Khanyar, Kothi Bagh and Nowhatta.
