SRINAGAR: Even as police claimed to have unraveled mystery behind recent killing spree in Sopore, a member of Hurriyat (G) in the tehsil said Tuesday that unknown gunmen tried to assassinate him.
A resident of Tarzoo, Sopore, Abdul Ahad Rehmani, an active member of Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Geelani was quoted as saying that some armed persons came to his fields with the intention to assassinate him. He said while one of the suspects remained in the vehicle, another was moving suspiciously around his fields with a pistol.
He had come to kill me when I was supervising work in my fields, said Rehmani, who runs a seminary in the village.
I and my labourers mustered courage and tried to approach the pistol wielding youth. However, before we could get close to him, he boarded the vehicle and fled, Rehmani added.
The alleged assailant, Rehmani said was donning a jeans and a half sleeve shirt and was taking directions from his associate, who was in the car. He said that the pistol borne youth were waiting for the opportunity to kill him.
Blaming the state agencies for planning his assassination, the Hurriyat (G) activist said that the gunmen could have easily fled from the area without being caught.
A police official confirmed that they have received reports about the alleged assassination bid on the Hurriyat activist.
We are investigating if such incident has occurred, the official added. (GNS)
