Srinagar: Strongly condemning the attack on a BSNL franchisee in Sopore, the Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani termed the attack an act of terror and expressed sympathies with the families of victims.
Unidentified gunmen Monday morning attacked the franchisee killing one and injuring two others.
This is clearly an act of terrorism, Geelani said in a statement, adding, those involved are enemies of humanity and Islam. They want to defame Kashmir freedom movement, he alleged.
Meanwhile Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) also condemned the Sopore attack.
JKCCS has consistently raised the issue of attacks on civilians by armed groups and the State actors. So far it is unclear who is behind this attack. In the last 25 years of insurgency and counter insurgency operations many civilians have been targeted. In almost all the attacks on civilians the police has failed to conduct credible investigations to hold the killers accountable. In the context of Indian policy of proliferation of terrorist groups in Kashmir for countering and defaming the Jammu and Kashmir movement, it has been always difficult to conclusively establish the culpable persons, it said in a statement.
JKCCS called upon United Jehad Council to establish who are the people behind this particular attack on non-combatants. If it is proved that the men responsible for todays attacks are from the armed groups, then certainly UJC has the moral responsibility of holding the accused accountable.
