KUPWARA: Three army men and a militant were killed and an officer sustained serious bullet injuries in a fierce gunfight at Tanghdar sector in north Kashmirs Kupwara district on Monday.
Official sources said that a group of 4-7 infiltrators had probably sneaked into this side last night near Darshan post along Line of Control (LoC) opposite to Pakistans Chhajula Post. The group of infiltrators were intercepted Monday morning by the armys 3/1 GR in the dense forest area.
The group after being challenged opened indiscriminate fire with sophisticated weapons upon the forces. The fire was returned by the army ensuing a fierce gunfight, they said.
In the initial gunfight, four army men, including a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) Subedar BB Thapa sustained serious bullet injuries. However, among the injured, three soldiers succumbed to injuries before being evacuated to armys 92 base hospital here in Srinagar, they said, adding that the condition of the officer is also said to be critical.
Sources identified the deceased soldiers as Lans Naik Aash Kumar, Rifleman Vishal Gurang and Rifleman Ankeet.
Meanwhile, a senior army official while confirming the incident said that armys alert troops foiled an infiltration bid along the LoC in Tanghdar sector. One infiltrator has been killed during the gunfight.
The operation is still in progress, he added.
