Srinagar: The business community in Southern part of Srinagar city observed a complete shutdown on Thursday against the government’s alleged failure to come to their rescue after last year’s devastating flood.
The call for shutdown was given by Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) led by Muhammad Sadiq Baqal.
In the Southern part of Srinagar city all the business establishments remained closed in protest against the insincere attitude of the government.
KTMF publicity secretary Hilal Ahmed Mandoo said that all the shops in scores of areas including Haft Chinar, Solina, Rambagh, Methan, Chanapora, Lal Nagar, Bagh-e-Mehtab, Wanabal, Kanipora, Chukpora, Kanihama, Pohru, Nowgam, Naikbagh, Budshahnagar, Pantha Chowk, Lasjan, Padshahi Bagh, Mehjoor Nagar, Jawahar Nagar, Radio Colony, Ikhraj Pora, Rajbagh remained closed and hundreds of traders assembled near Rambagh to participate in a peaceful protest.
KTMF president Muhammad Sadiq Baqal while addressing the protesting traders said that the people of the valley are not being treated at par with the people of other states of India. He said that when such catastrophes take place in other parts of India, the people there are provided relief immediately.
It is highly regrettable that the government didn’t move even an inch as far as providing relief to the business community of the valley is concerned. He said the strike was observed to remind the government that even after the eight months, business community continues to suffer. State Government should take a call as far as rehabilitation of flood affected traders is concerned otherwise it should be ready to ‘face the music’.
We have decided to provide a month to the government and if it failed to rehabilitate the flood affected traders, KTMF will launch Valley wide agitation and will come up with a comprehensive plan to deal with the situation, KTMF leaders said.
