Ganderbal: The second preparatory workshop for the first mhGAP monitoring and evaluation project in the world was held at district Ganderbal on April 27.
The workshop was coordinated by Dr Sayed Aqeel Hussain Consultant Psychiatrist and International Coordinator for mhGAP in Kashmir and Dr Mohammad Muzaffar Khan Director Police De-addiction Services Kashmir and state coordinator mhGAP in Kashmir.
Dr R D Kasana CMO District Ganderbal, BMOs of district Ganderbal, Medical superintendent of district hospital Ganderbal Dr Sameena Mufti , Dr G A Wani consultant psychiatrist and nodal officer of district mental health programme Kashmir attended and shared their views and experience with regards to implementation of the programme.
Addressing more than 50 participants who were trained last year in the use of mhGAP Dr Hussain explained the process of monitoring and evaluation in which the doctors will receive both local supervision and on line supervision by 10 UK consultants of various specialities including general adult, old age, learning disability, child and adolescent, psychotherapy and neuropsychiatry.
The online supervision will be provided using one of the most modern online supervision technology devised by Kings College London whose IT team will both train and support trainers and trainees in the smooth conduction of online supervision.
Addressing the participants Dr R D Kasana CMO Ganderbal reassured complete support on behalf of the administration in the smooth conduct of the programme . Dr Kasana also highlighted the benefits of the mhGAP programme and the role of the Ganderbal district in being the pilot district for mhGAP programme the results of which will be replicated in other districts..
Dr GA Wani consultant Psychiatrist and nodal officer for district mental health programme also assured support on behalf of directorate of health services Kashmir.
Dr Hussain explained that once the implementation phase is complete ,this will be followed by training the mhGAP trained doctors as master trainers as well as all the consultant psychiatrists in the district by team of master trainers who will be visiting Kashmir valley again as part of MOU signed between Kashmir government and Royal College of Psychiatrists London.
Dr Muzaffar Khan, state coordinator of mhGAP in Kashmir highlighted the role of mhGAP in reducing the gap between service need and service delivery by helping doctors to diagnose correctly, treat where possible and refer early and appropriately where needed to either specialist in the district or to secondary care services.
The mhGAP team highly appreciated the role of Director Health Services Kashmir Dr Saleem ur Rehman under whose dynamic leadership the mhGAP training in Kashmir was successful and endorsed by WHO as one of the innovative training projects for implementing mhGAP round the world.
