A thing of beauty is a joy forever
This is one of the lovely poems by John Keats and surely a magical one. We all love and admire beauty, we wish beauty to envelope us, we want to beautify our lives and faces, and it is logical also, because today the world gives first preference to outer beauty ignoring the inner one. But, the question arises, how can we measure the inner beauty? What is the value of inner beauty? Does it surpass the value of outer beauty? If we ponder at these queries, we would realize that although these are very simple questions, yet they tickle our brain to seek solutions. So here the discussion begins- what is valuable: a pretty face or a kind heart. If this question is posed to us in pubic, undoubtedly we would opt for the latter, but when it comes to accepting the one of two, most of us out rightly go for the former.
The thing is that we all want a beautiful house, a beautiful drive, a beautiful partner and the list is on, but what really is beautiful. This is a subjective term you see, what is beautiful for you might be vague for me, and what is vague for you might be priceless for me. Thus to avoid this confusion we need to first clear the meaning of beauty. For some people facial beauty is the only criterion to be beautiful, but for others, inner beauty matters which consists of a kind heart, a noble soul, positive approach and beautiful character. Let me clarify this with examples. Suppose there are two girls, one is very pretty with fair complexion, brown eyes and large tresses, and the other one has dusky complexion and domestic features. The fair one is very mean, rude and does not value others, Very stubborn and proud enough. And the other one is very calm, kind, gentle and soft. Whom do you think is more beautiful, undoubtedly the other one. Thus I again come to the point that beauty is beautiful indeed and we should not restrict its meaning to being fair or dark.
Thus to overcome this confusion, we need to broaden our vision and change our perception regarding beauty. Beauty without brains is just like food without salt, beauty without heart is just like book without contents and beauty without purity is just like ocean without water!! Is it?? I have spent more than five years in glorious city of Chandigarh, and one thing I like about this place is that people are beautiful at heart! They admire beauty and welcome beauty. Most of my friends often praise me for my typical Kashmiri fair complexion and mistakenly consider me as beautiful, but it often lands me in an awkward situation because for them beauty means just having a fair complexion. A person who has a beautiful heart and a soul is most beautiful for me. And what do I mean by a beautiful soul? Surely a person who is benevolent, humble, polite, classy yet down to earth!
I would like to mention a personal experience here. A couple of years ago, I was asked to judge a fashion show competition organized by my college. I could not accept this reality and questioned my teachers who chose a girl who is always clad in Hijab and far from the marquee of showbiz, fashion and glamour. Here my teacher answered my query in beautiful words, she said, Azra, fashion does not mean showing your bold avatar to public or making public display of your assets, it is a way of life, how you carry yourself, how confident you are! And you always walk and carry yourself with an elan thus you can be a better judge! Here I learnt one more thing in life, beauty surely does not mean a pretty face and glamorous clothes, it has much deeper connotation. So, next time you judge others do look in for something way different than a beautiful face!
Beauty they say lies in face,
Beauty is incomplete without grace!
