Karachi: Dr Syed Wahidur Rahman, also known as Yasir Rizvi, an Assistant Professor, at the Karachi Universitys (KU) Mass Communication department, was shot dead in broad daylight on Wednesday, 29 April. Four motorcycle-borne assailants reportedly opened fire on his car, in Federal B area and managed to escape. Police believe it may have been a case of mistaken targeting for a sectarian attack as Rehman was not a Shia Muslim. They are also looking to see if Rehmans killing has links with Dr Shakil Aujs murder as the two professors were close associates.
Regarding speculation that Dr Rahmans killing may have been linked to KUs scheduled talk on Balochistan Baloch Missing Persons and the Role of State & Society, one of his colleagues has said, He was in no way related to the Unsilencing Balochistan Take 3 to be held on May 6 at University of Karachi.
Following the attack on Rehman, educational activities at the university have been suspended, as per a formal notification issued by the university. Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has taken notice of the killing and asked for an inquiry report from IG Sindh.
Rahman had reportedly been working at the university for the last three years. He had completed his Masters and PhD from Federal Urdu University and worked there as a teacher, until he moved to KU. Some reports said, he worked as a journalist, before taking to teaching. The universitys vice chancellor had appointed Rehman as his media adviser.
