KARGIL: A woman set herself ablaze after a Jammu and Kashmir police officer allegedly raped her in Kargil region, an official said on Wednesday.
He said the accused police sub-inspector has been arrested and a Special Investigating Team (SIT) has been constituted for investigating the case.
According to the official, police in Kargil received an information that a woman in Chulichan village in Batalik has set her ablaze and was shifted to district hospital with severe burn injuries.
“Police immediately rushed to the hospital where the woman in her statement alleged that a police officer Mohammad Ramzaan of Police Post in Batalik raped her few days back,” he said.
She further said that she revealed the ordeal to her husband who did not pay attention to the matter as a result in desperation she drenched herself in kerosene oil and set herself ablaze, he said.
Police registered a case FIR no. 14/2015 under section 306,376 RPC and investigation was taken up.
A Special Investigation Team SIT headed by Deputy Superintendent of Headquarters and SHO has been constituted for investigation of the case.
The accused police Sub-Inspector Mohammad Ramzaan has been arrested and subsequently suspended, he said.
