Water level reaches 11.9, danger mark is 12
SRINAGAR: The water level at Dal lake at present, due to incessant rains, has reached upto 11.9 feet while as the danger level is 12 feet, LAWDA informed on Wednesday.
According to Sarmad Hefeez, VC LAWDA the latest level recorded at Dal lake was 11.9 feet while as when it reaches 12, the inner hamlets and areas around the lake start submerging.
He added that his office is in continuous touch with the district administration and is updating it the latest situation. W are keeping a close watch at the situation, if it turns out of control we will start evacuating the people- living in the peripheries of Dal, Sarmad said, adding that with the increase in the rainfall, the water level in the lake is expected to go high.
He said that already a meeting with the district administration has been held and facilitation centres and relief camps have been kept ready so that people could be taken to these places. We have the university campus, Hazratbal higher secondary, community hall at Nowhatta, High school Habak and other places which have been kept ready to meet any eventuality, VC LAWDA said.
Rainfall which began last night and is expected to continue for next two days, can again cause surge in the water of level of River Jhelum and its tributaries, officials said.
The Met department has forecast light to moderate rains today, raising fresh concerns among people who were hoping to see the end of woes caused by floods.
Director of Indian Meteorological Department in Jammu and Kashmir, Sonam Lotus, said that Western Disturbance is persisting over J&K and by evening, its intensity might increase leading to more rainfall. Lotus added that tonight is crucial for the state.
