No Threat to City, Assures CE
Says no breaches reported despite water flowing above danger level
SRINAGAR: Government on Monday ruled out any flood threat to Srinagar, saying the machinery is striving to keep the city safe from flood waters.
The chief engineer Irrigation and Flood Control Mir Javed Jaffar said that despite Jhelum flowing above the danger mark, there are no further breaches reported at the embankments and that Srinagar would be at stable position.
Entire men and machinery is on toes and continuously monitoring the situation at the Jhelum banks. The water level is receding and we hope betterment in the situation in coming time. A closer vigil is also being maintained in a bid to avoid any breaches at the river bunds while as the staff has been kept on toes to plug in any leakage, if happens, he said.
Jaffar assured Srinagar is at a stable position and if the waters continue to recede in Jhelum, the flood threat which looms large across Kashmir, will be over.
However, the Flood Control chief engineer was quick to add that the water still continues to flow above danger mark at Sangam.
Experts, meanwhile are of the opinion that after the downpour has stopped, the water levels are expected to recede in Srinagar too after several hours. The rising water in Jhelum in Srinagar, however, have inundated many low-lying areas of the city.
