Air traffic resumes, train service remain suspended
SRINAGAR: The Jammu-Srinagar highway remained closed for traffic for the third day today, while the airlines resumed operations, even as fresh snowfall and rains were reported from many area of the Valley.
Officials said that 300-km long Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed for vehicular traffic due to landslides at several places in Ramban and Udhampur districts including Nashri, Hangni, Gaoo and Kheri.
Though Beacon pressed into service their men and machinery to clear the landslides, the fresh rain and snowfall around Jawahar Tunnel hampered their operations.
More than 2000 Jammu bound light and heavy vehicles are stranded at several places in the twin districts of Ramban and Udhampur, an official at the traffic control room said.
No vehicle was allowed to ply on the highway because of the inclement weather. Efforts are on to make the highway through. If weather remains pleasant, the highway will reopen tomorrow and stranded traffic will be allowed first to move, the official added.
Besides the highway, the train service also remained closed for the second running day due to the accumulation of snow on the tracks in south Kashmir. However, late night reports said that the tracks were cleared and that the service might be resumed on Wednesday morning.
The air traffic, which remained affected for a day on Monday, also resumed. All the flights to and from the Sheikh-ul-Alam International Airport operated smoothly on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the MeT department has predicted that snow/rain will occur at isolated places across Jammu and Kashmir in next 24-hours.
12 structures collapse in Baramulla
Srinagar: At least twelve structures, including eight residential houses collapsed on Tuesday after heavy snowfall and incessant rains in Kandi area of north Kashmirs Baramulla district.
According to the CNS at least 8 houses collapsed after a huge portion of land caved in due to heavy downpour and snowfall in Laridora hamlet of North Kashmirs Baramulla district. Fifteen families residing in these houses have become homeless while district administration officials who rushed to spot to assess the damage assured all possible help to the affected families.
Reports said that besides the complete collapse of these 8 houses, around 12 houses suffered partial damage in the locality.
We have provided blankets and other necessary items to the affected families. We will rehabilitate them all while Deputy Commissioner Baramulla has directed the officials to help them in every possible way, an official said.
Several cowsheds also collapsed causing death of over 35 cattle.
Meanwhile, two persons were injured when at least four houses were damaged in Dharmbagh Kralapora area of Central Kashmirs Chadoora town in District Budgam. Confirming the incident, a police official said that residential houses of Abdul Ahad Rather, Bashir Ahmed, Bashir Lawdori and Ali Muhammad Ganaie were collapsed due to snowfall, he said but added no one was hurt during the mishap.
At Shah Gund Sonawari in District Bandipora the house of Abdul Rahim Dar collapsed leaving the 8 member family homeless.
