Srinagar: The family of Afzal Guru, the last man hanged in India, Tuesday welcomed the demand of PDP MLAs to seek the mortal remains.
A resident of Sopore, Guru was hanged in New Dehli’s Tihar Jail on Feb 09 2013 without allowing his family to meet him.
“If Mufti Sayeed as Chief Minister has raised the demand to seek mortal remains of Afzal, we well welcome it. But they should do not any kind politics over it. If they are really concerned about it, than we support them,” Aijaz Guru, brother of Afzal Guru, told GNS.
On Monday, Eight PDP MLAs issued a statement saying the party “promises to follow vigorously” for the return of the mortal remains of Guru.
“PDP stands by the demand for return of his (Guru’s) mortal remains, and the party promises to follow vigorously for the return of the mortal remains,” the PDP statement had said.
The legislators who signed the statement are Mohammad Khalil Bandh, Zahoor Ahmed Mir, Raja Manzoor Ahmad, Mohd Abas Wani, Yawar Dilawar Mir, Advocate Mohd Yosuf, Aijaz Ahmad Mir and Noor Mohd Sheikh.
“PDP has always maintained that late Afzal Guru’s hanging was travesty of justice and constitutional requirements and process was not followed in hanging him out of turn,” the statement had said.
“The way he was picked up from serial no.28 and singled out has been condemned by PDP and it stands by the demand for return of his mortal remains…,” it had added.
