Jammu: Astonished over the reference on Jammu and Kashmir made by the President Pranab Mukherjee in his address to joint session of Parliament, CPI (M) State Secretary and MLA Elect Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami on Tuesday said the poor and lackluster response shown by the government of India following the devastating deluge in September contradicts the declaration of the Honble President.
It is ironical that on the one hand the Honble President Pranab Mukherjee declares that Jammu and Kashmir occupies a place of enormous importance in the agenda of Government of India and on the other the union government is yet to respond to the magnitude of the devastation that was faced by the State in September floods, Tarigami said, adding that despite a vehement demand from the cross section of society the Government of India is yet to declare floods in Kashmir as a National disaster.
He said that at a time when Jammu and Kashmir is reeling under a severe financial crunch, the proposal mooted out by the previous government to meet out the liabilities necessitated by the September floods is gathering dust in the Prime Ministers office in New Delhi. What should people infer from the observations made by the President that Government of India has made special efforts to minimize the impact of disaster and augment rehabilitation measures in the flood hit Jammu and Kashmir? Isnt it paradoxical that the President seems unaware about the ground realities in the state and his speech reflecting a wide disconnect between the union government and the people of Jammu and Kashmir who are presently living in a pathetic condition on account of the devastation wrecked by the September deluge, Tarigami asked.
He said the lackadaisical attitude adopted by the Government of India vis-à-vis rehabilitation of flood affected families in Jammu and Kashmir has exposed the ostensible concern being shown by the BJP led Union Government that the state occupies a place of enormous importance in its agenda.
Reminding the President about the outstanding relief and rehabilitation services rendered by the local people especially the youth, Tarigami said that it would have garnered considerable appreciations had the President made a mention of the local youth while acknowledging the services rendered by the armed and paramilitary forces during the September floods in Jammu and Kashmir.
He said while the concern shown towards the rehabilitation of the displaced communities in the state is welcome but on ground there seems to be a political inertia hindering the momentum in the requisite process. (CNS)
