SRINAGAR: Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) Saturday said that public anxiety and anger over the outbreak of swine flu was because of non availability of vaccines, drugs and other protective equipments in the Valley.
Peripheral hospitals do not have the facility of sample collection or isolation for H1N1 patients who are referred to tertiary care hospitals. There are no separate flu clinics in tertiary care hospitals for H1N1 patients who mingle with other patients and risk their lives, said DAK president Dr Nisar ul Hassan.
Dr Hassan, himself an expert on H1N1 influenza said, The admitted H1N1 patients in hospitals are kept in intensive care units with other patients which is hazardous. Some of the doctors who tested positive for H1N1 at SKIMS were forced to deal with swine flu patients without protection. They were not given requisite vaccine or chemoprophylaxis and were treating H1N1 patients without wearing PPEs, he added.
He also criticized the outrageous comment on television by incharge flu officer that doctors contracted the disease because of their own carelessness.
The health officials failed to protect public health which was their obligation and are now rubbing salt into the wounds by irresponsible statements. The health officials by not acting in advance are responsible for spread of H1N1 virus in the community which has created chaos and confusion among public and are shamelessly denying their failure, DAK president said.
