MeT office issues weather advisory; Div Com issues avalanche warning
SRINAGAR: Kashmir Valley Monday received fresh snow and rains with Metrological Department issuing weather advisory for the State warning of snow and rain.
Fresh spell of rains in plains started last night which continued for the whole day leading to decrease in day temperature. The higher reaches of the valley received fresh snowfall, an official said.
He said the capital city received 9.4 millimeters of rain while 24 millimeters of rain was recorded in Kupwara in north Kashmir.
Due to rainfall, there was slight decrease in the day temperature here with Srinagar recording 6.9 Celsius, the official said.
Ski resort of Gulmarg in north received 4 inches of snow till Monday afternoon, an official from the Met office said. There would be no change in weather for next three to four days, the official added.
Meanwhile in its weather advisory issued on Monday, Met Office said under the influence of the Western Disturbance that is persisting over Jammu and Kashmir, the moderate rain/thunder shower (hail storm in Kashmir and Jammu divisions and at many places of Ladakh region. plains of Jammu Division) and snowfall over upper reaches will occur at most places.
Some places may receive heavy rain/ snow during this period. These weather conditions may trigger landslides & avalanches in vulnerable areas of the state, it said.
The MeT department warned that the above weather system may disrupt surface and air transport during these days. During above period, there will be significant decrease in day temperatures and slight rise in night temperature, the advisory issued by the MeT concluded.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Traffic, Muneer Khan said that despite intermittent rainfall, the one way traffic from Srinagar plied normally on National Highway today.
In view of prevailing weather, the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, has also issued an avalanche warning for the Valley, an official spokesman said in a statement.
The people living in avalanche prone areas of Bandipore and Kupwara districts are asked not to venture out during the above mentioned period and keep clearing the snow from roof tops of their houses to avoid any damage to life and property, the spokesman said, adding: The concerned Deputy Commissioners are also requested to take all precautionary measures so as to avert any untoward incident.
