SRINAGAR: Condemning the detention of his spokesman, the chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani alleged that the pro-freedom leaders were being barred from carrying out peaceful political activities by the State.
In a press statement, Geelani condemned the continuous detention of Ayaz Akbar, Hurriyat (G) spokesman who was arrested with the other pro-freedom leaders on the eve of death anniversary of Mohammad Maqbool Bhat and Mohammad Afzal Guru on 9th and 11th February.
While other separatist leaders were released but Ayaz Akbar remains in police custody.
Geelani, who is currently in New Delhi, said the government was following dangerous policies with regard to the pro-freedom leaders. These policies have nether resolved the Kashmir issue in the past and nor can these tactics help them in future, he said.
Geelani demanded release of other Hurriyat activists including Masarat Aalam Bhat and said: Hurriyat leaders are frequently detained and are totally denied political space the government can imprison the pro-freedom leadership but they cant confine their ideologies and thoughts.
At a time when the practice of resolving the disputed issues of the world in according to the wishes of the people has started, India should also shun its rigid and stubborn policy and should adopt a realistic approach with regarding to the Kashmir issue, he said, and asked Narendra Modi led new government of India that they should rethink over their policies and they should know the fact that the Kashmiris will never accept any solution which will be not according to the wishes and aspirations of its people.
In the changing global scenario if referendum can be held in Scotland, South Sudan and East Timor on the demand of its people then why dual standard is being followed with regarding to the Kashmir, Geelani asked.
