TEHRAN — President Hassan Rouhani said today the world needs Iran to help stabilise the troubled Middle East, in remarks pointing to the wider ramifications of a deal over Tehran’s disputed nuclear programme.
In a live televised speech to mark the anniversary of 1979’s Islamic revolution, Rouhani implicitly linked ongoing nuclear talks with world powers to resolving bloody conflicts in Iraq and Syria.
“If there is going to be peace and stability in the region, and terrorism is to be uprooted, there is no other way than with the presence of the Islamic republic of Iran,” Rouhani said.
Huge crowds assembled at Azadi (Freedom) Square in Tehran to hear Rouhani speak and commemorate the tumultuous ouster of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi 36 years ago. Hundreds of thousands of people in Iran’s major cities swarmed to the streets, carrying flags, banners and images of late founder of the Islamic republic Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, and his successor, incumbent Supreme Leader Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei, to mark the 36th anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution. .
In capital Tehran, people were also waving banners with anti-U.S. and anti-Israel slogans, while chanting support of the country’s rights to peaceful use of nuclear power.
Addressing a massive gathering at iconic Liberty Square, President Hassan Rouhani said these rallies indicate the reaffirmation of the Iranian nations allegiance to the Islamic Revolution.
Rouhani said that the Iranian nation wants constructive interaction with the world, but stressed that the Islamic Republic will continue to protect its interests and remain committed to the Revolutions principles and ideals.
“We seek a win-win agreement, according to which Iran would [guarantee] the transparency of its peaceful nuclear activities within the framework of international law and [in return] the opposite side should put an end to inhumane and illegal sanctions [against Iran].
This will benefit both sides, Rouhani said. On the day, Iranians put an end to 2,500 years of monarchical rule in the country.
The Islamic Revolution, under the leadership of Imam Khomeini, established a new political system based on Islamic values and democracy.
Earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that he agreed with “an agreement …, but no-agreement is better than any agreement which undermines the interests of our nation.”
A statement at the conclusion of the event underscored that Irans defense industry, such as the missile capabilities, signify the countrys deterrent power and could never be discussed in the nuclear talks with the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
The Western powers have imposed rounds of diverse sanctions on Iran eversince the revolution but Tehrans sphere of influence has only grown forcing US and Western powers to negotiate terms with the Islamic Republic.
