SRINAGAR: A Lieutenant Colonel and a Major were killed as a helicopter they were flying in crashed in the forests of Safapore in Central Kashmir Wednesday evening, sources said.
Dhruv helicopter of Army’s aviation squadron based at Manasbal crashed about 30 minutes after it took off during a training sortie this evening, killing the two officers, he said here.
Helicopter which was on night flying training sortie hit a hill near Krushu forest area of Chewa, Safapore and crashed inside the woods at arounf 7.45 P.M, he said.
Sources said that the crash led to the forest fire even as fire tenders, policemen and army rushed to the spot, they said.
Army’s Srinagar based defence official Brijesh Panday also confirmed the helicopter crash and said that search operation was been immediately launched in the area.
He said that there were two pilots on board the aircraft at the time of crash. Two bodies were recovered”, he said.
A local resident Abdul Rashid said that it may take hours for police, civil administration, fire tenders to reach the spot as it was on high altitude.
