Lahore: Militants in Pakistan early Sunday attacked a transmission tower in the southwestern Baluchistan province causing a massive blackout leaving almost 80 percent of the country without electricity.
Millions of homes have plunged into darkness following what is being described as the worst blackouts in the history of Pakistan as officials rushed to restore the supply.
“The attack causes a power surge that eventually affected about 80 percent of the country,” Zafaryab Khan, a spokesman for the Ministry of Water and Power said.
By mid-morning Sunday, officials said power had been restored to roughly half this country of 180 million people.
Khan estimated that it would take another six to eight hours for the rest of the power to be restored to the system.
The disruption in the electricity supply had been reported at Lahore’s international airport, and two nuclear power plants remain offline.
We are awake and monitoring the situation to ensure the earliest possible restoration of electricity to all, a message on the Twitter account of Minister of State for Water and Power Abid Sher Ali read.
It could be hours before the grid returns to normal, as a major fault in one part of the network causes disruption nationwide.
