SRINAGAR: The army Saturday said the imposition of ban by Pakistan on Jamat-ud-Dawah (JuD) led by Hafiz Muhammad Saeed was an important announcement and the events post-ban would be monitored.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a blood donation camp in Badami Bagh cantonment here, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 15 Corps, Lt General Subrata Saha, said: It is certainly an important announcement and we have to wait and see how the announcement manifests and how it is implemented on the ground. So quite clearly it is engaging our attention and we are monitoring the events on the ground
The Pakistan government recently announced that it has banned the JuD and Haqqani network, a Taliban affiliate operating in Afghanistan.
The Pakistan also imposed travel restrictions on Saeed, who is Indias most wanted, accused of orchestrating 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
I again reiterate the fact that it is certainly an important announcement and how it is going to manifest the implementation of the bit of the ground .that is something that definitely must be monitored , the armys top most Commander in Kashmir valley said.
Saha said the adequate security arrangements, to thwart the militant attacks, are in place across Kashmir ahead of Republic Day and President Obamas scheduled visit to New Delhi.
Enhance security measures are in place ahead of January 26. Also, a very high level visit is taking place and naturally all precautions are being taken in terms of intensified patrolling, in terms of surveillance, he said, adding, the some of the sensitive areas are specifically under surveillance.
The army Commander said the situation along Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir is stable and there are no specific indicators about militant threats since it is snowing from past 48 hours on heights ranging from 18 to 35 inches.
In reply to a question, Saha said there have been ceasefire violations and infiltration attempts along north of Pir Panjal. But we have dealt with them in the manner they need to be dealt with. We have dealt with them tactically we have retaliated effectively, he said. The GOC said out of 101 militants killed last year, 59 were killed in the process of infiltration.
He claimed that according to armys assesment150 to 160 militants are waiting to infiltrate into this side. He further claimed that there are 17 launching pads on the other side of the LoC from south to north.
Saha said there are 172 active militants across the Kashmir and the situation isnt grave. He informed that so far this year, 10 militants have been neutralized while 8 killed.
The GOC said due to huge collaborative effort of army, police, intelligence and other security agencies, the mission of successful elections with outstanding turnout was achieved last year. gns
