Srinagar: Strict security arrangements have been put in place ahead of 26 January in the Kashmir valley with Srinagar city witnessed increased security arrangements on Thursday.
According to Kashmir News Service, joint columns of police and paramilitary CRPF men were witnessed carrying out thorough checking of vehicles, and frisking of pedestrians. The forces were seen stopping vehicles at many places for carrying out the searches.
Police sources told KNS that there are reports that militants may enter in Srinagar to carry out attacks. Additional deployment of forces and police has been made at several places to stop any untoward incident, sources said.
The searches were conducted at Qamarwari, Jahangir Chowk, Lal Chowk, Parimpora, Bakshi stadium and numerous other places. Armored vehicles of police and paramilitary forces were seen at many road junctions. The vehicles entering into Srinagar from other districts were also being thoroughly checked at Parimpora, Bemina and Pantha Chowk. In many places, cops were seen wearing bullet-proof jackets and helmets.
However, a senior police officer said that it is a routine exercise. The frisking is a part of routine security arrangements and drill, he said and added that were prepared to meet any challenge.
