Srinagar: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Wednesday carried out mock drills in view of preparedness of snow fall here at SK Park Ward office Lal chowk.
The drill of snow clearance, in which hundreds of SMC employees participated, was monitored by SMC commissioner Dr G N Qasba. The drill was part of the exercise to have a prior test of employees efficiency, to aware employees about the plan chart in case of exigencies and sensitize them about the priority areas.
According to a statement the drill was kicked off by Commissioner Dr Qasba at around 2:30 pm till 4:30 pm. He personally conducted test drive of various vehicles in order to check the proper functioning of these machines. SMC is fully geared up along with its men and machinery including its mechanical and drainage division for snow clearance and dewatering in the city said Dr Qasba.
SMC in this regard has also charted out a detailed plan to clear snow from the city areas. The city has been divided into four zones which would be supervised by four zonal officers for snow clearance and dewatering operations.
“We have also chalked out detailed plan for priority areas where snow will be removed in the first phase to avoid any inconvenience to the public. All essential installations like hospitals, power stations, shrines, mosques, ration depots and other places of importance will be attended to swiftly in the wake of fresh snowfall,” said Dr Qasba.
The SMC has already alerted its 2700 ground staff and instructed that all necessary snow-clearance machines including robots, hoppers, catterpillers and dozers are kept on a standby mode so that that they are mobilised immediately on the day of snowfall.
