FAISALABAD: Ever since the government of Pakistan lifted a moratorium on the death penalty in terror cases following the Peshawar school attack on December 16 last year, 17 convicts have been hanged already. Seven terror convicts were executed early on Tuesday, 13 Jan, in jails across the country. Officials have indicated that a fresh list has been drawn up of more criminals likely to be executed.
The Express Tribune reports that three convicts were hanged in Sukkur Central Jail at around 6:30am Tuesday. Muhammad Talha, Khalil Ahmed and Shahid Hanif were sentenced to death in 2001 for killing then director of defence ministry. In Karachis Central Jail, Behram Khan was executed for killing a lawyer inside court premises in 2003, while in Faisalabad District Jail, two convicts – Nawazish Ali and Mushtaq Ahmad were hanged for attacking former military ruler Pervez Musharraf.
Balighur Rehman, the state minister for interior affairs, briefed the National Assembly on the National Action Plan- the 20 point plan to root out terrorism from Pakistan formulated after the 21st Amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan which empowers the military to take corrective and punitive action.
He said, it is a declared policy now that there is no good or bad [terrorist] and we will focus on the problem instead. Action against banned outfits is also on the cards, the minister said. According to his statement, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is closely overseeing progress regarding the implementation of the National Action Plan. The minister informed the lower house that seven cases of hate speech were recently filed in Islamabad alone.
Rehman said military courts are being established in the light of new legislation and a joint intelligence and security directorate is being established under National Anti Terrorism Authority (Nacta). He also said that 103 million mobile SIMs are being brought under the biometric system coupled with repatriation of Afghan refugees. The minister informed the lower house that all boards of the seminaries operating under the umbrella of Itehad Tanzeem-e-Madaris have agreed to get registered whereas a strategy would be devised against those not showing an interest in the registration process.
