New Delhi: As part of ongoing investigations into the Sunanda Pushkar murder mystery, the Delhi Police could soon question Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar. Sunanda, was found dead in mysterious circumstances at a posh south Delhi hotel on January 17, 2014, a day after her Twitter spat with Tarar over an alleged affair between her husband and Congress MP- Shashi Tharoor and Tarar.
Hindustan Times reports that Mehr Tarar being Pakistani, Delhi Police cannot summon her for questioning. They have instead prepared a detailed questionnaire to be sent to her through formal channels. Tarar being a foreign national cant be summoned to India. However, through the intervention of court and ministry of external affairs, we will ask her to participate in the proceedings for clarity in the case, said a senior police official.
Senior officials in the Delhi police claimed that Tarars version will help them establish the sequence of events in the run-up to Sunandas death.
Tarar had recently said in a TV interview, that she was ready to assist the probe into the mysterious death of Sunanda. If they want to ask me anything…If they want to ask me any question…I can answer, Tarar had said.
Meanwhile, Tharoor reportedly met Ahmad Patel, political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, on Sunday, 11 Jan, during which the issue of Delhi Police filing a murder case in his wife Sunanda Pushkar’s death was briefly discussed, according to a Firstpost report.
It says, highly placed sources in the party said Tharoor had sought an appointment with Patel two days ago and met him after his arrival in Delhi.
While the issue of registration of a murder case in Sunanda’s death came up for discussion briefly, the two leaders also discussed the prevailing political scenario and recent developments in Kerala, from where Tharoor has been elected to the Lok Sabha.
However, there is little chance of Tharoor meeting with Sonia or Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi in the days to come, the sources said, adding nothing has been decided on a further course of action against Tharoor vis-a-vis party affairs so far.
The Congress had earlier said that there must be an impartial inquiry into the matter.
Although Tharoor said he would cooperate in the investigation, Delhi Police said it will not question him as of now. Police will first question the other 11 people including Pushkar’s son Shiv Menon, her brothers Ashish Dass and Rajesh Pushkar, her cardiologist Rajat Mohan, a woman “Kaitie”, Tharoor’s personal assistant Rakesh Kumar Sharma and another family friend Sanjay Dewan – who found Pushkar dead when he came to enquire about her health at Leela Palace hotel – before questioning Tharoor.
Senior journalist Nalini Singh, with whom Pushkar was believed to be in touch over phone before her death, will also be called to join the probe, an official added.
After Sunanda was found dead at the Leela Palace in South Delhi on the night of January 17 last year, Delhi Police has only now registered a case of murder under Section 302 of IPC on the basis of an AIIMS medical report that concluded that her death was unnatural and due to poisoning. TANS
