SRINAGAR: With apparently no headway made in the process of forming a post-poll alliance, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday sought more time to complete negotiations on government formation in Jammu and Kashmir.
BJP President Amit Shah however showed confidence of forming government in the lone Muslim majority state in coming days.
Shah on Friday said his party has been holding talks with both PDP and NC over government formation but there has been no fruitful outcome yet.
Talks are on with both parties. There has been no fruitful outcome (yet), he told reporters here, a day after BJP sought more time from Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra in view of the ongoing dialogue with parties.
We want to form government in Jammu & Kashmir, Shah said in Mumbai.
Shah described the partys outcome in the Jammu and Kashmir elections as sizeable victory. He emphasised, We want to form the government in Jammu and Kashmir,
The magic figure to form the government would be half way mark of 44 seats.
Commenting on BJPs failure to make inroads in Kashmir, Shah said, Overall, results in J &K shows we have made a huge impact and got the support from the people. It is a massive mandate with party emerging ahead of others.
However, he wondered why anybody should try to undermine the electoral success of the BJP in J&K. Refusing to join the debate on why BJP failed to make greater inroads in Kashmir Valley on the lines of Jammu. Shah in his characteristic tough style said, BJP is amongst the largest party.
Earlier talking to reporters in Jammu, senior BJP leader Avinash Rai Khanna said that his party needed more time to carry forward its ongoing negotiations with other political outfits.
Our aim to to give the state a stable and strong government and for that we need some more time, said the BJP leader.
He was replying to a query on the progress his party has made in holding discussions with other parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party, to put together an alliance.
However, instead of saying that there has not been any progress made by his party in talks with the BJP or for that matter with other political entities, PDP chief spokesman Naeem Akhtar said, what do I say except for the fact that we are where we were on December 23.
The PDP has 28, the BJP 25, the National Conference 15 and the Congress 12 members in the newly elected J&K assembly.
The remaining seven seats in the 87-member state assembly has been won by the Independents and smaller parties. Agencies
