Srinagar: What could be seen as a major disappointment for the healthcare system of the state, Valleys prime tertiary care SMHS hospital lacks basic facilitiesputting hundreds of patients and their attendants into trouble.
The hospital which caters to thousands of patients everyday is seen still running on the same pattern as it was in 1942, when it was established.
Attendants complained that the hospital premises is not being cleaned regularly and anyone who enters it becomes highly susceptible to contract some disease.
I came to meet a patient I was shocked to see soiled bandages, polythene bags, dust, medicine cartons and empty cigarette packets decorated on the floor of hospital, said Nisar Ahmad an Engineer.
Despite many -No Smoking-signs displayed on the walls of the hospital, cigarette butts and empty packets are spotted almost everywhere on the ground.
Patients alleged that many people smoke inside the hospital premises and the security staff dont bother to stop them.
Despite ban on selling of cigarettes outside hospitals, shopkeepers and streets vendors are openly selling them, said an Official of SMHS wishing not be named.
Sanitation seems to be least priority as hospital does not have proper toilet facilities for patients and their attendants.
Nisar Ahmad Beigh an Attendent said, there are no proper facilities for female patients and attendents.
We have go in wards to find the bathrooms and those bathrooms too are so much stinking that there remains no other option for us to urinate outside in public, he said.
A female attendant Syed Gousia said that In casualty there is no proper ventilation which leads to suffocation and the Dustbins nearby make the condition worse. This filth and bad odour create nuisance here but nobody bothers.
The causality or general ward of hospital has less number of beds which is putting patients in trouble as two and at times three patients are compelled to share one bed. Gousia said.
Official Sources, wishing anonymity, told GNS that due to mismanagement in Administrative department, people suffer here like anything. Ask them about the problems being faced by the patients here, they divert the topic because they dont care about the sufferings of people. sources said.
Patients and attendants demanded immediate intervention by government so that this important hospital does not turn into a lifeless institution. (GNS)
