SRINAGAR: Irritated with frequent and consistent power cuts, inhabitants of Srinagar city and other parts of Kashmir Valley threatened to stage protests if power supply will not be provided as per the schedule.
The electricity is playing hide and seek from the past 15-days. Daily and frequent power cuts resulting unbearable hardships to us. It is highly unfortunate that in this intense cold conditions the PDD department doesnt ensure regular power supply, Ghulam Nabi Hakeem a local resident of Usman Abad, Shalteng, Srinagar.
Similarly, the locals of Kanispora area of Singhpora in Baramulla district also accused the Power Development Department (PDD) of being indifferent to their woes.
We are facing immense hardships in absence of electricity. We are unable to charge our mobile phones while appliances like refrigerators and iron are lying defunct, Firdous Ahmad, a local resident told GNS.
Meanwhile, the unscheduled electricity cuts continue to irk people in countless villages of Kupwara and Handwara.
The villagers at large allege that power was playing hide and seek and often they do not see electricity for hours. They said that they were being made to pay the tariff according to the curtailment schedule but electricity was not provided according to the same.
They said that people in many villages including Muqam-e-Shahewali, Anderhama, Bumhama, Drugmulla, Lalpora, Darpora, Kalaroose, Ticker, Trehgam, Hiri and scores of villages in Handwara were reeling under complete darkness.
People of these areas are facing frequent power cuts. During this harsh winter, these unscheduled power cuts have made our lives miserable, the local residents of famous Muqam-e-Shahwali village told GNS, adding that students are the worst sufferers of unscheduled power-cuts in frontier Kupwara district. They maintained that the erratic power supply has badly affected their studies.
The people warned the PDD officials of not to take them for a ride and if the situation remains the same in coming days they will have no other option except to protest.
They said in absence of electricity, people face hardships while students are forced to study under candle-light. We have been forced to take to streets, the locals said. They said if the power situation in the areas doesnt improve, they would be constrained to launch agitation. We are regularly paying our electricity dues, yet the power supply in our area is dismal, Waseem Altaf, a local resident of Muqam-e-Shahwali said.
