SRINAGAR: After the double hat trick in the state elections since 1977, the veteran NC leader Abdul Rahim Rathar on Tuesday had to bite dust along with several other big wigs who ruled J&Ks political horizon for decades.
NC leaders namesake PDP candidate for Kokernag Abdul Rahim Rather defeated Congress stalwart Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed.
Rather contested on NC ticket for the first time in 1977 and won. He later won 1983, 1987, 1996, 2002 and 2008 polls continuously.
Other political leaders who have also served the state as ministers also lost the present polls with the anti-incumbency wave turning the tables around.
Other bigwigs who had to eat a humble pie include Health Minister Taj-Mohi-ud-din, former Congress chief and Education Minister Peerzada Sayeed, the Deputy Speaker of the state assembly Sartaj Madani, PHE Minister Sham Lal Sharma, Law Minister Mir Saif-ullah, CAPD and Transport Minister Choudary Mohammad Ramzan, the Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir, Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, , Social Welfare Minister Sakeena Itoo, Tourism Minister Ghulam Ahmad Mir, Minister of State for Home Sajad Kitchloo, PWD Minister Abdul Majeed Wani, former Law Minister and NCs provincial president Nasir Aslam Wani, former ministers RS Chib, S.S. Salathia, Dr Monohar Lal Sharma, Raman Bhalla, Mohammad Sahrief Niyaz, Harsh Dev Singh, Shabir Ahmad Khan besides others.
The sitting MLAs who witnessed defeat on Tuesday include PDPs Bandipore MLA Nizzam-ud-din Bhat, NCs Kafeel-ur-Rahman, Aijaz Ahmad Khan, PDPs Abdul Gaffar Sofi, Peerzada Mansoor, Dr Shafi Ahmad Wani, Rafi Ahmad Mir, NCs Dr Mustafa Kamal, Irfan Ahmad Shah, Peer Afaq Ahmad, Haji Mohammad Ashraf, Javed Dar and several others.
