KUPWARA: A militant was killed in an encounter with government forces in frontier district Kupwara on Thursday.
Police sources said that after receiving inputs about the presence of militants in Sulkote area, merely one kilometer away from the district headquarters, army personnel from 41 RR and a special team of SOG Kupwara cordoned off the area on Wednesday night. Nobody was allowed to leave the village soon after the cordon was laid around. During early hours as the government forces started search operation, a militant hiding in a residential house attacked searching party with AK-47 rifle, resulting in an injury to an army jawan a police official said and added that bullet hit an army jawan but he according to him is out of danger.
He said that the exchange of fire between the hiding militant and the government forces resulted in the death of a militant.
Superintendent of Police Kupwara district, Abdul Rashid told CNS that one AK rifle, 3 magazines, one Radio Set and some documents were recovered from the encounter site. He added that efforts were on to identify the slain militant.
A senior Army spokesman quoting Lieutenant General Subrata Saha, GOC Chinar Corps said that the input was received from an intelligence agency and the slain militant was a foreigner working for Lashkar-e-Toiba. Based on a study of the recoveries from the slain terrorist, it is assessed that he was preparing to receive a group, the army spokesperson said.
