SRINAGAR: Protests erupted in Maisuma area on Tuesday
after police arrested a man after failing to arrest his son on the charges of stone pelting.
Reports said that a police team conducted a raid at the house of Mohammad Yousuf Dar at Maisuma locality in a bid to arrest his son Ashiq on charges of stone pelting. However, Ashiq gave police a slip and managed to escape. Later police detained elder Dar and took him to the police station.
Dars arrest sparked violent anti-police protests in the area.
Residents came out of houses and staged demonstrations to protest the alleged police highhandedness. The protesters blocked the road demanding immediate release of Dar.
Protesters hurled stones at the police and CRPF. The forces used tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters. This led to outbreak of fierce clashes, reports said, adding The traders downed their shutters and ran towards the safer places,
Meanwhile, a police official said Ashiq was involved in many stone-pelting incidents and was evading arrest.
