SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir is all set to go for second phase of polling in 18 Assembly Segments with 175 candidates in election fray.
In Kashmir Division, the polling is scheduled to take place in Karnah, Kupwara, Lolab, Handwara, Langate, Noorabad, Kulgam, Home-Shalibugh and Devsar.
In Jammu Division, the polling is scheduled to take place in Gulabgarh, Reasi, Gool Arnas, Udhampur, Chenani (SC), Ramnagar, Surankote, Mendhar and Poonch Haveli.
Official sources said following militant strikes in Palhallan, Shopian and Poonch, the security has been intensified across Kashmir and in poll bound areas of Jammu Division.
In Kashmir, the frisking by police, army and Special Operation Group (SOG) has been intensified. Though, the security was already beefed up but due to militant strikes in Palhallan and Shopian, we tightened it further, they said.
Sources said army and SOG have laid checkpoints at dozens of places in Kupwara district and are conducting frisking of private and public vehicles. The motorcyclists and suspected persons are also being questioned and frisked, they said.
The security has also been beefed up at Sopore, Pattan and Baramulla. Residents said SOG and army are conducting night patrolling in Baramulla areas.
In south Kashmirs Kulgam district, the government forces have intensified the security following killing of Sarpanch in neighbouring Shopian district on Sunday late evening. The forces have laid checkpoints on entry and exit points of the district. The patrolling by army has been intensified particularly in the areas where militants are suspected to be hiding, the official sources said.
All the polling stations would be taken over by government forces including police and paramilitary personal by Monday evening.
In Poonch, the army is conducting patrolling during day time as well as in night. Besides, police and paramilitary troops are already deployed in strength in the district, the sources said.
In Reasi and Udhampur, the Authorities have deployed adequate number of security personal on polling stations, an official said.
Since Arnia attack, we are on alert and we wont allow anyone to create hurdles in democratic process, the official said.
