SRINAGAR: Maintaining that there was no specific militant threat during the coming assembly elections, Director General Police (DGP) K. Rajendra Kumar Tuesday said that the police have prioritized the conduction of polls sans any disruption.
Rajindera said that though there is no specific militant threat for the coming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, starting from November 25, the police in view of the recent incidents is taking all the necessary measures to thwart any militancy related incidents.
DGP was talking to KNS over phone from New Delhi after the security review meet.
He added that the department has prioritized its efforts in ensuring elections in conducive atmosphere without any disruption in law and order situation.
Over the threat of the stone pelting incidents during the polling days at various areas of Kashmir valley, the DGP remarked that the elements which are hell-bent upon disrupting the poll activities at various places have been identified and that preventive measures will also be taken in a bid to avoid any disruption in law and order situation particularly during assembly elections. We have seen in the past that various persons during the stone throwing incidents have been targeting the polling stations and disrupting the poll process at large. We have identified them and we will not allow anyone from any place to get a free hand in disturbing the elections, Rajendra said.
Over the declaration of various polling booths as sensitive and hyper sensitive, the state police chief remarked that the polling booths located in close proximity of the areas wherein militancy related incidents have taken place shall be declared as the hyper sensitive and sensitive booths.
The DGP said that he meeting discussed the overall security scenario of Jammu and Kashmir in view of the coming assembly elections. He added that the meeting also discussed to bring additional logistic support from the neighboring states of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, if needed.
ARMY, SOG BEGIN NIGHT PATROLLING
With elections round the corner and in the wake of killing of a pro-India political worker, the army and Special Operation Group (SOG) of police have started night patrolling in sensitive areas of south and north Kashmir.
Official sources said that after the killing of a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) worker, Ghulam Mohiuddin Dar, in Dogripora village of Pulwama district, the two forces have started night patrolling in Gulzarpora, Beighpora, Trisal, Dogri pora, Awantipora and Tral villages of Pulwama district.
Besides, the forces have also started night patrolling in Pulwama town.
The army and SOG, sources said, started patrolling to foil possible attacks on political workers and infuse confidence in them ahead of polls.
Sources said the government forces doesnt want repeat of what happened during parliamentary polls when several Sarpanchs and Panchs were killed in a series of attacks by militants in Tral and other areas of south Kashmirs Pulwama district.
Sources said the night patrolling has also been started in Sopore, Palhallan and Pattan areas of north Kashmirs Baramulla district. Besides, the patrolling has been started in few areas of Bandipore district.
The Bandipore district is going to polls on November 25.
Pulwama, since last two years, has emerged as the hotbed of militancy with militants shifting their base from Sopore in north Kashmir due to increased pressure by forces. (GNS)
