SRINAGAR: Two more militants were killed in the ongoing encounter in Handwara forests taking the death toll to four.
A senior police official said that the joint team of army and police had launched the search operation in the Waderballa forest area of Zachaldara on Tuesday morning when some militants attacked them. The forces retaliated ensuing a gunfight resulting in killing of a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) Rajesh Kumar of 30 RR and a militant. The operation was suspended late in the night due to darkness.
Today early in the morning, the forces intensified the searches and the militants tried to break the cordon, however, they were engaged in a gunfight, he said, adding that the exchange of firefight continued for several hours.
Two more militants were killed during the encounter and the bodies have been recovered along with three AK- 47 rifles from the site, he said. The bodies of the militants were later handed over to the police for further formalities.
He said that the cordon and search operation in the area is still going on to flush out the two more hiding militants.
Pertinently, On October 13, the joint team of armys 21 RR, 30 RR, 6 RR and SOG had launched a combing operation following the suspicious movement about the presence of some militants in the area. The search party was fired upon by the same militant group resulting in killing of a soldier.
2 LeT members arrested
The polices Special Operation Group (SOG) have arrested two members of a militant outfit and recovered two pistols in Srinagar city outskirts, official sources Wednesday said.
Official sources said that S0G which is a counter-insurgency force during a raid arrested Sajad Ahmad Dar, son of Sanaullah Dar, resident of Methan Chanapora and Javid Rasool Bhat, son of Ghulam Rasool Bhat, resident of Nowgam.
The arrests came just two days after SOG arrested three persons along with five pistols in Mahjoor Nagar area.
They said the duo was affiliated with Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba.
Sources said SOG also recovered two pistols from Sajads possession.
After the announcement of State Assembly polls which are starting from November 25 the security agencies have intensified anti-militancy operations across the Kashmir region.
