Handwara: An army jawan was killed on Monday when militants attacked a patrol party near Wadarbala forest area of Handwara area of frontier district Kupwara.
Defense sources said that a group of militants attacked a patrolling party of 21 RR near Wadarbala forest area during morning hours. The Army jawans retaliated with same force while the exchange of fire continued for an hour, an official said.
Sources said that soon after the firing, reinforcement comprised of 30, 32, 6 RR, CRPF and SOG Handwara was called in, who cordoned off the area to trace the militants. The exchange of fire resulted in the death of a soldier while another was injured. The deceased soldier Garav Sorab Singh belonged to 30 RR, Official said.
Defence sources added that at least two militants are present in the forest and a hunt has been launched to nab or kill them. The operation is still in progress, however, the exchange of fire has halted, sources said.
