Before I refer to the Hadees of Ghadeer-e-Khumm, let me remind my fellow Muslims that it is related to Syedena Ali Murtaza (Ktw) who was given various titles by our beloved prophet (S) like Al-Murtaza- (The Chosen one of Allah), Babul Ilm (The gateway to the city of knowledge), Saiyyidul Ausiya (The chief of deputies of the holy Prophet) Imamul Auliya (The guide of the saints) Asadullahul Ghaleb (The ever triumphant Lion of Allah) Yadullah (The Hand of Allah) Wajhullah (The Face of Allah) Valiullah (The Friend of Allah) Abu Turab (The Father of the Soil) Faateh-e-Khaiber (The Conqueror of Khaiber), Haidar-e-Karrar (The Charging Lion).
He was husband of the beloved daughter of the prophet (S), Fatima (AS), the best woman of the people of the Jannah); the cousin of the prophet (S), and the fourth of the rightly-guided khalifahs.
I am not referring to the qualities of Ali (KTW), because they are well known. I just want to highlight the significance of the Day of Ghadeer.
A Hadees in Sahih Muslim Book 031, Number 5920:
Yazid b. Hayyan reports, I went along with Husain b. Sabra and ‘Umar b. Muslim to Zaid b. Arqam and, as we sat by his side, Husain said to him: Zaid. you have been able to acquire a great virtue that you saw Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) listened to his talk, fought by his side in (different) battles, offered prayer behind me. Zaid, you have in fact earned a great virtue. Zaid, narrate to us what you heard from Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him). He said: I have grown old and have almost spent my age and I have forgotten some of the things which I remembered in connection with Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him), so accept whatever I narrate to you, and which I do not narrate do not compel me to do that. He then said: One day Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) stood up to deliver sermon at a watering place known as Khumm situated between Mecca and Medina. He praised Allah, extolled Him and delivered the sermon and exhorted (us) and said: Now to our purpose. O people, I am a human being. I am about to receive a messenger (the angel of death) from my Lord and I, in response to Allah’s call, (would bid good-bye to you), but I am leaving among you two weighty things: the one being the Book of Allah in which there is right guidance and light, so hold fast to the Book of Allah and adhere to it. He exhorted (us) (to hold fast) to the Book of Allah and then said: The second are the members of my household I remind you (of your duties) to the members of my family. He (Husain) said to Zaid: Who are the members of his household? Aren’t his wives the members of his family? Thereupon he said: His wives are the members of his family (but here) the members of his family are those for whom acceptance of Zakat is forbidden. And he said: Who are they? Thereupon he said: ‘Ali and the offspring of ‘Ali, ‘Aqil and the offspring of ‘Aqil and the offspring of Ja’far and the offspring of ‘Abbas. Husain said: These are those for whom the acceptance of Zakat is forbidden. Zaid said: Yes.
This hadeeth is also narrated in other books: Tirmithi, Ahmed, An-Nasai, Al-Hakim and others.
Mosnad of Ahmed:
Ibn Namir told us that Abd Al-Malik (Ibn Abi-Sulayman) told us according to Attia Al-`ufi who said: I asked Zayd Ibn Arqam and I told him that some people told me a hadeeth according to you about Ali (ktw) in the day of Ghadeer Khumm and I want to hear it from you. So Zayd said: You people of Iraq, you have what you have. I told him: Do not worry about me. He said: Yes we were in Al-Juhfa and the prophet (peace be upon him) came to us holding the hands of Ali (ktw) and said: O people don’t you know that I am with the believers from their selves. They said: Yes. He said: kuntu mawlaah fa Ali mawlaah. [Attia] said: Did he say: man waalah wa `ad man `adaah (O Allah: Befriend whosoever befriends him and be the enemy of whosoever is hostile to him). [Zayd] said: I told you as I heard it.
The saying “man kuntu mawlah fa Ali mawlah” is correct and strong. The addition , “O Allah: Befriend whosoever befriends him and be the enemy of whosoever is hostile to him” is also correct.
It means that Ali (ktw) is loved by the prophet (S) and that we should love him and give nusrah to him. May Allah (swt) join us with Ali and the rest of the companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) on the pool to drink from the honorable hands of the prophet ( peace be upon him ).
