Srinagar: All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) has demanded for a probe into the reasons that led to the flooding of dozens of localities in the Srinagar city and also in different parts of Kashmir valley. The Committee has also stressed the need for stern action against the politicians and officers who played havoc with the life and properties while being responsible for the flood.
In a statement, APSCC Chairman Jagmohan Singh Raina said that it is imperative to find reasons for the flood so that responsibility is fixed and action is taken against the erring officials or politicians. Raina said that there is a notion among the people that some officers and politicians worked against the interests of people and same led to flood across state especially Kashmir valley.
A probe in the handling of flood situation would be best to soothe the bruised sentiments of the people. There are people who say that water could have been diverted and the city could have been saved from the flood. However, the state government succumbed to the pressure and ultimately was paralyzed. As such valuable documents of government were lost and the economy of business community got derailed with business centres suffering phenomenal losses, said Raina.
Lauding the efforts of local people for carrying out relief and rescue operations in flood hit areas the APSCC Chairman said that state government and its machinery failed in providing relief to affected people. He said volunteers along with NGOs and personnel of Army and Indian Air Force (IAF) played a pivotal role in rescuing people and providing them essentials of life.
Referring to the visit of various Sikh groups to the flood affected areas in Srinagar city, Raina said that GPC Presidents of Aloochi Bagh, Mehjoor Nagar, Haft Chinar, Magarmal Bagh and Batmaloo namely Devender Singh, Pritamjeet Singh Pummy, Kishanjeet Singh and Janak Singh met flood affected people in the Srinagar area along with him and conveyed their concern.
