SRINAGAR: A 23-year-old engineering student from J&K was killed when he was run over by a speeding train near Kartarpur on Amritsar-Jalandhar rail route, police said today.
The incident happened late last night when Paras Zutshi was crossing a rail section between Suranasi and Kartarpur to return to his institute, Inspector General of state rail police Surinder Sodhi said.
The youth was a student of state-run BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar.
“Paras was taken to a hospital in a critical condition, where the doctors declared him dead,” Sodhi said.
“The body has now been sent for post-mortem after which it will be handed over to his relatives,” he added.
Following the incident the students of NIT staged a dharna in the institute’s premises last night and protested against the rail authorities, he said.
