Srinagar: Every time there is a crisis, the Srinagar Municipal Corporation has been known for running cleverly crafted PR notes well before the people may start screaming. On Wednesday, when the whole city was marooned due to overflowing drains and absence of out-ducts in the roads, the Commissioner of the city administration was quick to manage interviews, in which he would claim how great a job he was doing to “fight the rains.”
For example, a news agency reported thus: SMC commissioner G N Qasba today took stock of de-watering exercise that is on round-the-clock in the city since yesterday evening an unusual situation thrown up because of unprecedented showers since yesterday (sic) Following reports of water logging, the SMC commissioner took a review meeting on dewatering progress after extensive field visits at different working stations and areas under submergence.
The officials have claimed that 76 pumps have been pressed into service and the overflow of drain water or accumulation of rainwater would be “drained off”.
” PDD has also been requested to provide uninterrupted power supply for these dewatering stations Besides these pumps, 37 mobile dewatering pumps have been deployed on demand and ten mobile pumps have been put on standby mode said Commissioner SMC. A dewatering mobile pump has already been set up at Haj House near Cooperative colony,” Qasba is quoted as said.
Four permanent dewatering stations has been established during the current financial year at Shalteng, Lasjhan, Ali masjid, Parimpora. The SMC is jointly carrying out the task of draining the rain water with the Fire and Emergency Services which has already put in place mobile dewatering vehicles at different places in Srinagar including Bemina, Magarmal, Sonwar etc. The SMC has prioritized areas and all those places where there are reports of submergence will be attended to.
