Thiruvananthapuram: In a historic first, forensic science was used to settle an ownership dispute over a domestic cow. The bizarre disagreement occurred in Gods own country- Keralas Kollam district, where a court decided to settle a two-year legal battle between two women over the ownership of a cow by conducting a DNA test.
Hindustan Times reports that two years ago, Geetha complained that she left her cow to graze in a nearby area but it did not return. She claimed that the cow and its calf were found in a nearby village after a few days but the alleged owner Sasilekha refused to part with the cow.
Geetha proceeded to file a police complaint, refusing to settle the case as both women insisted on being the cow’s owners. Subsequently a case of theft was registered against Sasilekha and her son. However, both of them were granted bail by the Kerala High Court.
On further inquiry, police found that the mother of the disputed cow was alive. The court in its wisdom, ordered a DNA test on both cows, to ascertain whether they were related. The report concluded that blood samples of the disputed cow and its mother did not match, and hence, granted Sasilekha, possession of the animal.
The counsel for Sasilekha- N Chandra Babu said, It is a rare case. Perhaps this is the first time a DNA test was held on a cow to find out its real owner. We are planning to seek compensation from the complainant for undue mental agony inflicted on my client.
