Sensible Muslims the world over are looking on with horror at pictures of the savage butchery that terrorists, who claim blasphemously to be acting in the name of Islam, are incredibly, entirely pleased to be posting on the Internet.
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah spoke for Muslims everywhere when he lambasted the evil men of violence and condemned them for tarnishing the image of a merciful and tolerant religion, Islam.
The king asked how humans could kill each other like sheep. It was shameful and disgraceful he said, that the terrorists were killing those whom Almighty Allah has forbidden and were mutilating their bodies and feeling proud to publish these atrocities.
By their terrible crimes and actions, the men of violence have distorted the image of Islam, said the king. They were causing all those who did not know the reality of Islam to think falsely that they represented Islamic values. The king reminded his listeners in a hard-hitting address this week that Allah Almighty had said of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): And We have not sent you, (O Muhammad), except as a mercy to the worlds.
The king warned that the war crimes committed by the Israelis in Gaza were triggering more violence in the Middle East. He said that the extremists should not be permitted to hijack Islam and allow the rest of the world to think that Islam is a religion of hatred and terrorism.
Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques said that he was sure that he spoke for all Muslim men and women around the globe. He said that he himself was at the forefront of the fight against terror.
He made clear that the battle against extremism called for more than a physical confrontation with the men of violence. It was also a matter of hearts and minds. In this respect Muslim scholars had a pivotal role to play in combating the deviant ideology that the terrorists were using to justify their savagery.
The king called on officials and Islamic scholars everywhere to speak out against the horrors of terrorism. Everyone should be working together to defend the Islamic faith. Clerics should overcome indifference and silence and shoulder their responsibility in protecting the religion.
From the cradle of revelation and the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) he urged leaders and scholars of the Islamic nation to carry out their duty toward Allah Almighty. They should stand firm in the face of those who sought to seize Islam and present it to the world as a religion of extremism, hatred and terrorism.
Clerics and scholars should not hesitate to speak the word of truth and not fear anyone as the Muslim ummah passed through what he characterized as a critical and historic hour. History, he said, would be a witness against those who have exploited and been exploited by the enemies who sought to disperse and tear apart the nation and tarnish the pure image of Islam.
The king regretted that those promoting discord had found a fertile ground in the Arab and wider Islamic world. The men of violence, so full of hatred, had been deluded into thinking that they had gained strength and could continue to spread terror and corruption in the world.
Repeating that terrorists who pretended to be acting in the name of Islam should be confronted both physically and ideologically, King Abdullah regretted the international failure to properly coordinate the battle against bigotry. –Arab News
