Srinagar As India celebrated its Independence Day, the authorities barred people from offering Friday congregational prayers in central Jamia Masjid by placing the historical mosque under siege amid curfew-like curbs today.
Dozens of police and paramilitary personal deployed in Nowhatta where Jamia Masjid is located restricted people from coming towards mosque and directed them to return back, witnesses said.
Fearing pro-freedom and anti-India protests, the state authorities, since 2010, routinely bar people from offering Friday prayers in Jamia Masjid on curfew days. A religious amalgam Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulama headed by valleys chief priest and chairman of Huriyat Conference have time again flayed government over the move.
