SRINAGAR: India’s ‘informal’ war with Pakistan in 1999 came alive on Tuesday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi detailed the eyewitness account of the old summer encounter at Kargil hills . ” I was very much here, not as journalist but as a BJP worker,” Modi said as he spoke to a 5000-strong gathering in Kargil, which inhabits little over twenty thousand souls.
Earlier, in his well-crafted speech at Leh, Modi accused Pakistan of waging a “proxy war” against India and said, “India is suffering more causalities due to terrorism than it would afflict in a proper war.”
He, however, hastened to add that the terrorism was a global problem and sought unity among world powers in order to fight it. India is committed to strengthening and uniting these humanitarian forces, he said.
The neighboring country has lost the strength to fight a conventional war, but continues to engage in the proxy war of terrorism, he said while addressing soldiers of the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.
Modi said India was committed to strong armed forces, well-equipped with modern arms and technology. The jawans should be assured that the entire country supports them, he stressed.
Citing the Kargil infiltration, about which the first information was given by a shepherd named Tashi Namgyal, he said the countrys armed forces deployed in border areas were well-connected with the people who live there. Modi interacted with the soldiers and wrote in the visitors book that pea There was a time when prime ministers never visited the state. I have come here two times already, said the prime minister, who was decked out in a traditional Ladakhi gold-coloured robe and hat for the occasion.
We want to make jobs available for the youth. We want educational institutions for the youth. We want to promote the skill and bring smiles. The government is committed to developing tourism in this region,” the Prime Minister said, apparently in a bid to woo the voters. “You have supported us and I am sure you will support us in future.”
Corruption is troubling us. People are angry. I assure that we will fight corruption and work with all those against graft. Corruption has ruined the country. I promise that we will fight against corruption with full might, he said.
