Srinagar: Army on Friday said three militants were killed in an ongoing encounter along Line of Control (LoC) in Tanghdar sector in north Kashmirs Kupwara district.
It said that Armys 3/1 GR, 5/5 GR and 20 RR launched a massive hunt to track the suspected militants who had reportedly infiltrated into this side near Gagadori last week. The group of 6-7 militants reportedly managed to sneak into this side on July 31 last month and since then they are hiding in the area, Army sources said.
On August 6 when the Armys 3/1 GR cordoned off the whole Gagadori area near Eagle Post following the suspicious movement, the militant group hiding in the area opened heavy fire with sophisticated weapons killing one of the soldier Naik Damoder Thapa, they said, adding, Following the killing of army soldier, armys 3/1 GR alongwith extra contingent of forces including 5/5 GR and 20 RR launched a hunt to track down the militant group,
Early this morning as the joint team was conducting searches in the upper belt of Gagdori forest close to the Line of Control, the militants opened heavy fire upon the forces triggering a fierce gunbattle that lasted for more than three hours, they said. During the exchange of gunfire, three militants have been killed so far. Meanwhile, a senior army official confirmed to GNS that three militants have been killed and all the three bodies have been recovered along with the arms and ammunition. The identity of the slain militants is yet to be ascertained, he said. The operation in the area is still in progress as there are intelligence reports of about the presence of a few more militants in the area.
