Srinagar: Police Wednesday saved a policeman from the wrath of public after he was allegedly caught red handed molesting a female in a public transport bus in old city.
Eyewitnesses said that passengers travelling in a Tata 407 vehicle from Soura to city centre Lal Chowk spotted a Jammu and Kashmir Armed Policeman in civvies harassing a female on board. The man, according to eyewitnesses, much discomfort to a female passenger was passing lewd remarks and was harassing her.
The male passengers especially youth dragged the accused out from the vehicle near Gojwara chowk and thrashed him mercilessly. They stripped him and tied him with an electric pole. The timely intervention of police party saved the accused from the wrath of the people.
Confirming the incident, a police official identified the accused as Nirmal Sharma of Kathua. The accused is a Jammu and Kashmir Armed policeman posted in 12th Battalion, he said.
SP city North Tahir Saleem said that accused has been arrested and lodged in police station Nowhatta. We have registered a case vide FIR number 80/2014 under section 341,323,294 of RPC and investigation has been taken up, he said.
